What do you do when the world around you is annihilated, and everything you ever knew or believed in goes up in smoke?
This is the dilemma that confronts our hero Lance and his friends as they’re plunged into a world of chaos after the sun ejects a solar flare that destroys the earth, killing billions of people. The Burning is the first part of a young adult sci-fi trilogy that addresses the question you’ve probably asked yourself at some point: what would I do if there was an Armageddon?
An Adventure depicting the end of the world and civilization as we know it, The Burning follows Lance and his friends who are on the run from a group calling itself “The Sanctuary”. Its leader Tyler, a friend turned foe, initially recruits Lance’s group to help him rebuild what was lost in the Burning. However, Lance and crew eventually fall out with Tyler because they can’t stomach Tyler’s plans to kill anyone who is over thirty-two years old. The Sanctuary blames this age group for destroying the Earth.
Once Lance and his friends flee from the Sanctuary, Tyler makes it his personal mission to destroy them and show others what happens to those who defy him. By hiding in the woods and moving from place to place, they’re able to stay one step ahead of the Sanctuary until there’s a big showdown between two groups where Tyler’s top lieutenant is killed in the book’s climax.
The first part of this captivating thriller ends with Lance being shot and captured by United Nations soldiers following an ambush that also claims the life of Hector, the man who had saved them from The Sanctuary.
Verdict
If you’re into young adult fantasy and sci-fi books and adventure, this story about an apocalyptic dystopian world should make for a good read. The Burning, by Patrick Jean-Paul, has all the hallmarks of a good fantasy plot: a friendship turned sour, a man-hunt that leaves death and carnage in its wake, and a moral dilemma of who’s right and who’s wrong in a world where there’s only one rule: survival for the fittest.
